12 Song Challenge, Demo, Songwriting, Worship

This is a song written as part of this year’s 12 Song Challenge and I realised I hadn’t put together a demo of the song. So here is a rough piano/vox demo as a placeholder in the meantime. I sung as I played, so the vocal isn’t the best but that isn’t the point of the demo.

If you like my stuff, please take time to like the video and subscribe to my channel as there are more songs coming.

Lead Me

Verse 1:

Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.
As I go through my day I call to you
For you have been my refuge, and my strong tower
And as my heart grows faint, I cry out to you

Chorus:

Lead me, oh lead me, to the rock that is higher than I
My fortress, my refuge, my saviour, beginning and end,

Verse 2:

Let me spend my days resting in your house
Settled safe beneath the shadow of Your wings.
For you heard my cry, answered my prayer
No matter what may come, I know you’re by my side.

An Update on What’s Been Happening

Update, Writing

Hi Everyone,

I know it’s been a while since I last posted, so I wanted to take some time to explain why.

At the start of the year, I was planning to finish up five songs for release. But life doesn’t always go as planned, and other things ended up taking priority.

Back in May, we sold our house. Selling a house and getting ready to move takes up a lot of time and energy. We’re hoping to move to our new home in the next month or so, which means the songs I wanted to finish have had to wait.

Meanwhile, I’ve also become more involved with our church. I’ve been helping out with the prayer ministry and now lead one of the early morning prayer meetings. It’s been a rewarding experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve in this way.

I’ve also started writing again. I’ve always enjoyed writing and recently I’ve found myself back in that world. I’m currently working on two books. The first is a Pride and Prejudice variation, and the second is a book on prayer for our congregation. I’m planning to make the book on prayer available on Kindle, so more people will be able to read it.

I appreciate your patience during this busy time. My aim is to get back to posting regularly soon, sharing more about my life, my music, and my writing. Thank you for sticking with me, and I look forward to catching up more in the future.

Best wishes,

Richard

12 Song Challenge, Demo, New song, Songwriting, Worship

It’s been a long time since I posted and, like of people who do similar things I’m going to blame the busyness of life. There is lots going, most of it good.

I’m still active in the 12 Song Challenge hosted by Resound Worship and the reason for today’s post is to share the song I have submitted for November.

The challenge was to write a song based on Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians. It took me a while to find a passage that really stirred me and I finally settled on Chapter 1 and verse 20.

“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”

Yes and Amen

All the promises of God find their ”Yes” in Jesus Christ x2
So Ask, seek, knock and the door will be opened to you x2

God says Yes! Yes! Yes! He says Yes! x2
Give glory to God with a loud Amen! x3

Songwriting, Update, Worship

I first got the idea for a song based on the names of God in 2008, but it took until 2021 to write, record and release it. Why was that? Find out in this video.

12 Song Challenge

This month in the 12 Month Song challenge, we are going to be writing songs based on psalms.

Its interesting as you read through the book of psalms how many lines from songs we sing pop up and its no surprise that as a song writer I’ve written my fair share of psalm based songs. Some have work but most haven’t. So this month gives me the opportunity to revisit some of those past efforts and see if I can build some of them into a decent song.

In the meantime I thought I’d share one of the songs I did complete and we have used in church.

It comes from You (Psalm 121)

Verse 1

I lift my eyes up to the mountains where does my help come from?
I lift my eyes up to the mountains where does my help come from?

Chorus 1

(Voice 1) It comes from You
(Voice 2) You are the Maker of heaven and earth.

(Voice 1) It comes from You
(Voice 2) Who watches me and will not fall asleep

(Voice 1) It comes from You
(Voice 2) And who will watch over all of my life

Where can I go but you, Lord?
Where can I go but you?

Verse 2

I lift my prayer up to the heavens where does my help come from?
I lift my prayer up to the heavens where does my help come from?

Chorus 2

(Voice 1) It comes from You
(Voice 2) O Lord My God, I take refuge in You

(Voice 1) It comes from You
(Voice 2) You are my shield and my hiding place

(Voice 1) It comes from You
(Voice 2) You are my rock and the strength of my life.

Where can I go but you, Lord?
Where can I go but you?

Coda

For You have the words of eternal life
You have the words of eternal life
You have the words of eternal life
For me

Last time:

You have the words of eternal life
You have the words of eternal life
You have the words of eternal life
Where can I go but You?
Where can I go but You?

12SongChallenge, Demo, New Song. Not Finished yet.

Not completed a new song for a few months now. In 2021 I have spent most of my time recording, mixing and mastering songs for release and then, taking a well earned(?) rest.

The 2021/2022 12 Song Challenge started this month with the theme of the Holy Spirit and I now have a completed song, albeit needs some polishing.

The begins with Acts Chapter 1 when Jesus tells them for wait for the gift promised by the Father

Wait (wait in Jerusalem)

Verse: 1

Wait, wait in Jerusalem
for the gift my Father promised to you.
Wait wait for the counsellor
Wait for the promised Spirit of Truth

Chorus: 1

For John baptised with water,
But I baptise with fire
When the Holy Spirit comes
He’ll embolden and inspire
You will be my witnesses
So wait…

Verse 2

Time, time passed too slowly
And slowly people started to leave.
Soon, soon just a remnant
Stayed faithful to the call they’d received

Chorus 2

On the day the Spirit came
The building shook with power
With the sound of rushing wind
And anointing tongues of fire
They became his witnesses
To the world…

Middle 8

In the last days I will pour out my Spirit
Young and old, will prophesy.
On my servants, every woman every man
On all peoples of this world.
He will come

Verse

Now, now hear him calling
To leave our place of comfort and ease
Move, move into action
And rise to fight injustice and greed

Chorus

He did not leave us orphans
He gave to us his power
So let us go with boldness
and take this world of ours
Let us be his witnesses
In our time

Middle 8

In the last days he has poured out His Spirit
Young and old, can prophesy.
On His servants, every woman child and man
On all peoples of our world.
For all time

New release, Worship

Finally, 17 or so years after it was written, Here at the Cross has been released as a track.

It was the first one of my songs where someone came up to me the first time we did it in church and asked me if I’d really written it. I didn’t know whether to be happy or insulted!

Check it out here

Here Here At The Cross

Verse 1
Here here at the cross
I see my sin I see my shame
I see the price the price that you paid
All that you did all that you gave
And I know there is nothing I could say or do
There is nothing could earn this gift from you

Chorus
The gift of your love
The gift of your peace
Forgiveness that’s full
Forgiveness that’s free
Freedom from guilt
Freedom from fear
Those who were far
You have brought near
Here at the cross
Here at the cross

Verse 2
Here here at the cross
I see the thorns piercing your brow
I see the spear thrust in your side
And I want to run I want hide
For I know there is nothing I could say or do
There is nothing could earn this gift from you

Verse 3
Here here at the cross
I know the truth you’ve set me free
All that I was all I have been
The old ways are gone I am made clean
And I know there is nothing I could say or do
There is nothing could earn this gift from you

Now on Bandcamp

Jesus, Son of David is now released on Bandcamp.

Unlike other sites, its not one covered by Distrokid and therefore it is a place where artists can set their own prices, get paid better and generally have more freedom. The site has a more indie feel than Spotify, but Spotify does have a much higher user base. That said, I think its a great place to release music and I will be using it more often going forward.

Check it out.
