I am alive CD cover

I’ve been looking through my old demos to see which ones are in a fit state to be released on YouTube as Soundcloud has become unusable for people who people who don’t want to set up an account. YouTube is accessible to all even if they have to put up with ads.

The latest demo release is I am Alive, which was originally scheduled for my planned EP prior to covid. A lot of it was recorded at a friends house in January 2020, but its languished in my files because of a whole number of reasons, none of which are particularly valid.

The song was written as i was reading a list of who we are in Christ from Joyce Myers website and I just began to sing who were are over and over again.

Thanks to Leke for recording everything and adding drums and basic piano and Stephen for the additional keys and horns. I miss you guys.

I Am Alive

Verse 1
I am free from the law of sin and death
The Holy Spirit lives in me
I am dead to my sin and alive in Christ
The Holy Spirit lives in me

Chorus
I am alive
I am alive
I am Alive

Verse 2
I am free from my fear for He’s my peace
The Holy Spirit lives in me
And my trust is in Him for He is my rock
The Holy spirit lives in me

Ending
For God within me
Is greater than he
That is in the world

I am excited to say I have a new release that is out on Spotify and Apple Music along with YouTube

The song was written as part of the 12 Songs Challenge in October 2022 and focuses on the love of God and how it changes us. I love using the song in worship and use it a lot when I am out worshiping God in my local shopping centre on a Saturday morning.

So check out the song on your favourite streaming platform or watch the video below. And if you dont already follow/subscribe please do so on social media and all the other platforms.

I will give thanks to the Lord

Worship

Recently, while doing some open-air worship, I sang a song I hadn’t sung for years.

Based on Psalm 7, the song was written in 2003 and was captured on a cassette tape during a time of worship at Woolwich Community Church in December of that year. It was then transferred from the cassette onto an MP3 file, so the quality was a little rough. I have tried to clean up a bit, but I have only been partially successful. Nonetheless, I like the performance, particularly the flute played by Mary Campbell.

The full band was:

Richard Stringer: guitar and vocals

Mary Campbell: flute and vocals

Brian Foster: congas and vocals

Caroline Brown: keys

Sound Desk: Mark Fraser

I hope you enjoy the song and thanks for listening.

Update, Worship

A while ago, I took my music down from streaming platforms as I needed to redo the terms of the distributor I was using. I re-released Jesus, Son of David and King of Glory, but didn’t get round to re-releasing Here at the Cross so I am not finally doing that. You can find out more by following this link.

Bandcamp, New release, Olwen, Singer/songwriter

My Friend, Olwen Ringrose, from nearby Pontyclun, has released a new EP on Bandcamp. It contains five tracks she recorded as demos between 2010 and 2012 of songs which are all cracking song. She’s more of a singer/songwriter than a writer of congregational songs, but she does that as well. She’s also a team leader on this year’s 12 Song Challenge.

You can listen for free on Bandcamp and the tracks are available for download, for a contribution which you can set yourself. All the money made from this project is going towards the costs of recording her new 10 track album.

Worship

I wrote this song back when I first got a keyboard and although its seen a few outings I haven’t used it much. But given all that is going on in our world, I felt that it was a good time to share it it.

May the Lord bless you and keep you (Hearts & Minds)

May the Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and
give you peace and give you peace.

May the Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and
give you peace and give you peace.

And the peace of God,
that passes all understanding,
Fill your hearts and minds
With the full knowledge of God.

And the peace of God,
that passes all understanding
Fill our hearts and minds
With the full knowledge of God.

Last time:

Fill our hearts and minds
With the full knowledge of God.

Jesus, Son of David

I wrote this more than five years ago. Its been a popular song over the years but, in my opinion, its never worked to my satisfaction in a congregational setting. Its partly because we can’t get close to this arrangement, but also because I want to sing it in a higher key than is comfortable for a congregation.

It was recorded over a number sessions with the engineering by Leke, who also did the drum programming and plays all the keyboard parts. Additional vocals are by my eldest daughter, Hannah.

The recording is a bit rough and I am looking to get it finalised in the coming months.

I need you, Lord,
Oh, how I need you, Lord
Like a desert needs rain, like a fire needs a flame
In my heart, there is a longing Lord
For the deeper things
To go beyond my sin
Only you can give me what I want
Lord Jesus, only you can satisfy

I cry Jesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me, have mercy on me! (x2)

Lord I know,
That I have done some things
That I’d rather try hide from the worlds prying eyes
But I know, darkness will flee from light
And I’m getting quite tired
From this everyday fight Only you can give me what I want
Lord Jesus, only you can make me clean

I Cry Jesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me, have mercy on me! (x2)

And it doesn’t really matter what the world may think
All that matters is I meet with you today!
Yes, it doesn’t really matter what the world may think
All that matters is I meet with You,
Jesus, that I meet with You today!

Recording project

After a number of years using home recording to share my music I have decided to book some studio time and do it ‘properly’. Apart from being able to share the songs online through streaming services and the like, I will also be making chord sheets and piano arrangements available.

The first stage is to select the songs and over the coming weeks I will be sharing some of the songs I am looking to record. Most if not all will be songs that we use on a Sunday morning as part of our corporate worship and I hope that through this project others may use them as well.

I’ve been trying out the available DAWs after years of using Audacity and I’m now using the trial version of Studio One Producer. I had been using the free version for a while to get used to it and now I’ve switched to the full version.

So now I’m working through the songs I’ve written selecting the ones that I’m going to record some new demos. One of the hardest things is not learning the new software, but working out the arrangements for the songs. When we use one of the songs on Sunday, we don’t have specific arrangements mainly because we don’t have a wide range of instruments that make that necessary. So I’m working on the arrangements, and most importantly, the sound for each song. I have five songs that I’m working on and I’ll publish the results as they are finished.
